What a cookie is

A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep, so it can recognise the browser later. Cookies are what make sign-ins and shopping baskets work, and they are also what lets advertising networks follow people between sites.

The cookies this site sets

SsnapTik uses Google Analytics 4 to understand how many people visit, which tools they use, and which pages are broken or ignored. It sets two first-party cookies:

• _ga — a randomly generated number that lets Analytics tell one browser from another, so two visits from you are not counted as two different people. It lasts about two years.
• _ga_HSVBZ07NJN — holds the state of your current session. It lasts about two years.

Neither cookie contains your name, your email address, or anything you typed into the site. They are random identifiers, nothing more.

What Analytics does and does not see

Google Analytics records which pages were viewed, roughly where in the world the visit came from, the browser and device type, and which site or search brought you here.

It does not receive the links you paste into the downloaders. Those are sent to our own server to be processed and are never included in an analytics event. What you download stays out of Analytics entirely.

Other third parties

• Google Fonts. The typefaces are served by Google. This sets no cookies, but Google does receive your IP address as part of the request, as it does for any site using its fonts.
• Older article pages. Some of the earlier guide and tool pages still include Google's advertising library. No advertising account is connected to it, so no ads are served, but the script itself is present and Google may set cookies when it loads.
• A leftover consent banner. Those same older pages show a cookie notice inherited from a previous version of the site. It is not wired to the analytics described here — clicking Decline on it does not currently switch Analytics off. Use one of the methods below instead.

How to opt out

Any of these will stop Analytics seeing your visits, and none of them will stop the downloaders working — the site does not rely on cookies to function:

• Block cookies for this site, or block third-party and tracking cookies, in your browser's privacy settings.
• Use a private or incognito window, which discards the cookies when you close it.
• Install Google's official Analytics opt-out add-on, which works across every site that uses Analytics.
• Turn on your browser's tracking protection, or use a content blocker. Most block Analytics by default.

If advertising is switched on later

This site is free, and advertising is a realistic way to cover its costs. If ads are enabled, advertising cookies will be set and this page will be updated to say exactly which. That has not happened yet, and this page will not claim otherwise.
