What a cookie is

A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep, so it can recognise the browser later. Cookies are what make sign-ins and shopping baskets work, and they are also what lets advertising networks follow people between sites.

What this site uses

The five language pages — English, Arabic, French, Spanish and Hindi — set no cookies. They also do not use local storage or session storage. Nothing about your visit is written to your browser by these pages, so no consent notice is shown on them: there is nothing to consent to.

Because there are no accounts, the site has no need to remember who you are between visits. Your language choice is carried by the address of the page you are on, not by a stored preference.

The exceptions, stated plainly

• Older article pages. Some of the earlier guide and tool pages still include Google's advertising library. No advertising account is connected to it, so no ads are served, but the script itself is present and Google may set cookies when it loads.
• A leftover consent banner. Those same older pages show a cookie notice inherited from a previous version of the site, which mentions analytics. There is no analytics on this site, so that banner is out of date. It is being removed along with the ad script.
• Google Fonts. The typefaces are served by Google. This sets no cookies, but Google does receive your IP address as part of the request, as it does for any site using its fonts.

If advertising is switched on later

This site is free, and advertising is a realistic way to cover its costs. If ads are enabled, advertising cookies will be set, this page will be updated to say exactly which, and a consent notice will be shown where the law requires one. That has not happened yet, and this page will not claim otherwise.

Controlling cookies yourself

You can see, block and delete cookies from your browser's settings, usually under Privacy. You can also block third-party cookies entirely, or browse in a private window so everything is cleared when you close it. Blocking cookies will not stop this site from working, because it does not rely on them.
